MOBILE ELEVATING WORK PLATFORM (MEWP) TRAINING

Beginning on December 10th, 2019 dealers, owners and operators must be trained or retrained in order to comply with the newly defined ANSI suite of standards in the areas design, safe use, and training.

These standards include major changes including additional training requirements. All training must be delivered by a qualified person who is experienced with the particular classification of MEWP on which training is being given.

This qualified training provider must be knowledgeable about the laws, regulations, relevant terminology, proper machine selection, safe use planning, risk assessment, rescue planning, recordkeeping, and machine operation.

While MEWP operator training is still mandatory, this requirement now also extends beyond operators to include others who will come in contact with a MEWP on the job site including supervisors and occupants.

Owners and Users

Owners and users must train and familiarize, or have proof of training and familiarization, for all employees they allow to operate a MEWP

Supervisors

The new ANSI A92 standards for the access industry state that anyone who directly supervises MEWP operators is considered a supervisor and now needs supervisor compliance training. Supervisors must be trained in everything from proper MEWP selection to potential hazards and how to protect against them.

Operators

Operators must ensure that the training they receive meets the most recently published ANSI standards.

Occupants

Occupants must possess basic knowledge including how to lower the platform in an emergency, how to use fall protection, etc in order to meet the requirements of the new ANSI standards.
